vaux’s swifts are a type of bird that migrate through portland every year on their way down to venezuela for the winter months.  since the 1980s, they have stopped at chapman elementary school in portland to roost in mid-september, in the school’s chimney of all places.  sean, christie, miles, elena and i trekked to portland on 9.24 to see the spectacle.. the birds were truly amazing.  they fly in huge groups and encircle the chimney just before dusk to find a place to roost overnight.  though i felt at times like tippi hedren, it was a fantastic and awe-inspiring sight!
